Afreximbank is taking applications for its paid internship program, and interns get a tax-free stipend of USD 1000 every month. If you’re relocating from your home country, there’s an extra USD 500 housing allowance. The internship runs for 3 to 6 months, and most placements are at the bank’s head office in Cairo, Egypt.
The application listing went up on October 5, 2026, and it has no closing date. Still, the bank only takes a limited number of people in each batch. Don’t wait.
About the Afreximbank internship program
Afreximbank is the African Export-Import Bank. It’s a big bank owned by African governments and some other investors, and its work is to finance and grow trade inside Africa and between Africa and the rest of the world. The head office is in Cairo. It also has branches in Harare, Abuja, Abidjan, Kampala, Yaoundé and Bridgetown.
The internship is for students. The bank wants you to learn how African trade and trade finance work, then bring fresh ideas back to them. When you start, you go through their normal induction, get attached to one main department, and get a mentor. After that you’re moved around other departments of the bank during your stay. At the end, you write a report on what you gained and how you plan to use it.
This one is not virtual. You have to relocate to the office you’re placed in, and most are in Cairo. If you’re still deciding between an office internship and a remote one, read Remote Internship or Office Internship Which One will Help Your Career More.
Benefits you get from the Afreximbank internship program
- USD 1000 every month, tax-free. That’s the stipend.
- A housing allowance of USD 500, but only if you’re relocating from your home country. Both the stipend and the allowance are paid at the end of each month.
- Hotel for one week (bed and breakfast only) when you arrive for induction, plus transfer to the hotel when you land and back when you leave after a successful internship.
- Your residence visa for the whole internship, if you need one.
- Medical insurance for the duration of the internship, as the application listing says.
- Return fare to the internship location from your school, using the cheapest direct route, in line with the bank’s travel policy (this one is in the official terms page).
Everything else is on you. Accommodation after the first week, meals, transport, clothing, and medical and accident insurance are your own cost, so plan your money before you go.
How much you can earn from the Afreximbank internship in total
Stay the full 6 months and the stipend comes to USD 6,000. Add the USD 500 housing allowance for 6 months and that’s USD 3,000 more, so USD 9,000 altogether. For a 3-month stay it’s USD 4,500.
The older terms text on Afreximbank’s internship page still shows a USD 800 stipend and USD 400 housing allowance. The current application listing, posted October 5, 2026, shows USD 1000 and USD 500. Go by the listing.
Who is eligible to apply for the Afreximbank internship program
- You must be a national of an Afreximbank member country. Nigeria is one. Students of African descent living abroad can apply, and so can non-African students whose vision for Africa’s transformation matches what Afreximbank stands for.
- Age 20 to 32 in the year you apply. It’s the year that counts, not a particular date.
- Full-time undergraduate or postgraduate student at a recognised school. They prefer people who can show proof of enrollment in the year of the internship, so if you just graduated, your chance may be lower.
- Fields they’re most interested in: economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, sciences, engineering, or something close to these.
- English or French, fluent. And a working knowledge of the other one.
- Children of Afreximbank staff can’t apply.
On the language line, most Nigerian students study in English, so the French part is where a lot of people will get stuck. It says working knowledge, not perfect French. Arabic or Portuguese is a bonus, not a must.
Documents you need to apply for the Afreximbank internship program
- Letter of application

| Length of internship | 3 months minimum, 6 months maximum |
| Time to accept an offer | 2 weeks from the conditional offer |

The listing doesn’t say which season a new application goes into. So you can’t tell for sure if you’re in line for January or June. Apply early and let the bank sort it out.
What happens after you get the Afreximbank internship offer
The first offer is conditional. You have two weeks to accept it, or it expires. Before you start, you also have to show proof of medical insurance and group personal accident cover that works in Egypt (or wherever you’re placed). Fail to do that and the offer is withdrawn automatically.
There’s a mix-up here. The listing says medical insurance is provided during the internship, while the official terms ask you to show your own cover before you start. Ask the bank which one applies to you when the offer comes, and get the answer in writing.
Some other rules you should know before you apply:
- You can only intern once, for 3 to 6 months.
- Interns are not staff, so no staff benefits.
- Getting the internship doesn’t promise you a job, before, during or after it.
- Break the group’s rules and the bank can end your internship on very short notice.
