ECOWAS opened its 2026 Startup Awards application portal on August 3, closing August 31, 2026. Apply at ecowasstartupawards.ipawas.org if you’re a citizen of an ECOWAS country running a startup (Nigeria inclusive) that’s at least two years old, has a working product, and falls under EdTech, FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech, CleanTech, or Tourism/TravelTech. You’ll need a passport, business registration, two years of financials, a 10-page business plan, a 10-slide pitch deck, and a one-minute pitch video. Total prizes come to $65,000, plus mentorship, investor access, and digital tools for winners.
ECOWAS just opened the application portal for the second edition of its Startup Awards, and startup founders in Nigeria and 11 other member countries now have till the end of the month to submit. The portal has been live since August 3, 2026, and it closes on August 31, 2026. So if you run a startup and you fall inside the eligible sectors, you have a few weeks left to sort out your documents and apply.
This one is not a small thing. Total prize money is $65,000, split among the top three startups that make it to the finals. It’s the second time ECOWAS is running this award. The first one held in Niamey, Niger, back in November 2021.
What this ECOWAS Startup Awards thing actually is
ECOWAS stands for Economic Community of West African States, that regional body that groups Nigeria together with 11 other West African countries. Through this Startup Awards programme, they want to find and support startups that are doing something real in digital transformation, regional trade, and building things that actually solve problems across the region. The Commission’s Directorate of Private Sector and Industry is running the show, working with two other groups: the Pan African Alliance of Small and Medium Industries and the Investment Promotion Agencies of West African States.
They’re targeting 60 startups from across the 12 ECOWAS member states this year. Not every sector qualifies though. Your startup has to fall under one of these six:
- EdTech and Skills Development
- FinTech
- HealthTech
- AgriTech and Food Systems
- CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation
- Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech
If what you’re building doesn’t sit inside one of those six, this particular round is not for you. Simple as that.
Who is eligible to apply for the ECOWAS Startup Awards
To qualify, you need to tick all these boxes. You must be a citizen of an ECOWAS member state, and Nigeria counts. Your startup itself has to be registered and based in an ECOWAS country too, not somewhere outside the region. It also needs to have been running for at least two years already, this is not for an idea you just started last month. You need a working product or service that people can actually use right now, and you should be able to show that the thing has traction, meaning real users or real sales, or at least proof that it can scale up. And of course, you’ll need all your documents ready before you start filling the form.
How to apply on the ECOWAS Startup Awards portal
The portal address is https://ecowasstartupawards.ipawas.org/. That’s the official site, go there directly and don’t rely on any random link floating around on WhatsApp or Facebook.
First thing you do is create an account. You’ll need your full name, an email address, and a phone number, though the phone number part is optional. You’ll also set a password, and it has to be at least 10 characters long. After that, you log in to your dashboard and click to start a new application.
The application form itself is broken into sections, from Section A all the way to Section J. That’s a lot, but the good news is you don’t have to finish everything in one sitting. You can save your progress as a draft and come back to it later, as many times as you need before the August 31 deadline.
Before you even start though, gather these documents so you’re not scrambling halfway through:
- National passport or any ECOWAS-approved identity document for the lead founder
- A recent passport photograph, nothing fancy
- Business registration certificate, issued in an ECOWAS member state where that applies to you
- If your numbers are still young, two years of financial statements, management accounts, or projections will do
- Business plan, maximum 10 pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman, size 12 font
- Pitch deck, not more than 10 slides
- A one-minute pitch video. MP4, MOV or WebM, file size under 100MB
Get all of these ready in a folder before you touch the portal. Trust me, filling ten sections of a form while still hunting for a financial statement in your email is not a nice way to spend your evening.
How ECOWAS picks the winners for this Startup Awards
This part is worth knowing because it affects how you should even write your application. Selection happens in two stages. First is the national stage, where each of the 12 member states gets to nominate half of its allocated slots directly, while the other half comes from open applications like the one you’d be submitting through the portal. So even without any government connection, you still have a real shot through the open track.
Whoever makes it past that stage goes on to the regional finals in Abuja, where you pitch live in front of an independent jury made up of industry experts, investors, and policy people.
And the scoring goes like this. Problem clarity and solution fit carries the most weight at 20%. Innovation and originality also gets 20%. Team capacity and how well you can actually execute takes 15%. Market potential and scalability, business model and financial viability, social and economic impact, and how well you line up with ECOWAS’s own priorities each get 10%. The remaining 5% covers your pitch performance, online voting, and data integrity. Knowing this breakdown before you write your business plan can help you put weight where the judges are actually looking.
Important dates for the ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026
Applications opened August 3, 2026, and close August 31, 2026. If you make it through, selected startups go into virtual masterclasses from September 21 to 25. Then comes the physical event in Abuja, running September 28 to 30, where the pitch competitions, exhibitions, and investor deal rooms all happen. The regional finals and the final pitches before the jury also fall on September 30.

Money is not the only thing on offer here. Yes, there’s $65,000 split among the top three, with the first runner-up getting $20,000 and second runner-up getting $15,000.
