FG, through SMDF, has opened a grant called EMERGE for mining exploration companies, critical minerals projects, and postgraduate researchers in geosciences. Exploration and critical minerals projects can get up to 70% of costs funded; research projects can get up to 100%. Applications open tomorrow 1st of August 2026 at smdf-emerge.com.ng. Get your documents ready now since the exploration stream is first-come, first-served.
If you’re into mining, geology, or you’re a postgrad researcher in that space, this one concerns you. The Federal Government, through the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), just opened a new grant programme called EMERGE, and applications open tomorrow 1st of August 2026.
EMERGE stands for Early-Stage Mineral Exploration & Research Grant Endowment. Simply put, it’s FG money meant to help small exploration companies, researchers, and universities push their mining projects and studies forward, especially where the main wahala has always been not having enough capital to even get started.
The fund and where to apply, quickly
Since this is what most people want to know first: exploration companies and critical minerals projects can get up to 70% of their eligible costs covered (you provide the remaining 30% yourself). Researchers and research institutions can get up to 100% funding.
You’ll apply directly on the official portal at smdf-emerge.com.ng. Applications open in August 2026, and the portal has it counting down to August 1.
Who is this grant really for?
EMERGE isn’t for everybody. It’s split into three funding streams, each one for a different kind of applicant.
Exploration grants go to licensed junior mining companies doing groundwork like geological mapping, geochemical and geophysical surveys, drilling, and assaying.
Critical Minerals grants are for companies targeting lithium, tin, tantalum, nickel, cobalt, rare earths, and similar minerals, or anyone building new tech to process these locally instead of shipping them out raw.
Research grants go to Master’s and PhD researchers, university departments, and research institutions doing applied geoscience or mineral processing research.
Are you eligible to apply for this grant?
It depends which stream you fall under.
Exploration companies need to be CAC-registered, tax-compliant with a valid TIN, hold a valid exploration licence from the Mining Cadastre Office, have already done some prospecting, and have a real technical team plus geological data to show for it.
Universities and research institutions need to be accredited (NUC accreditation counts) and working in geosciences or a mining-related field.
Master’s and PhD researchers need to be currently enrolled at a Nigerian institution, studying something like geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral processing, or metallurgy, and you’ll need a letter of support from your supervisor.
What EMERGE won’t cover
The grant doesn’t fund actual mine development or production, conference travel, loan repayments, depreciation, staff bonuses, or entertainment-type expenses. For research grants, general lab equipment and university overhead costs are also excluded. If your budget leans on any of these, you’ll need to plan for them separately.
Documents to prepare and apply with
Get these ready before the portal opens so you’re not scrambling last minute.
If you’re a company: your CAC documents, tax clearance certificate, exploration licence, a detailed work programme, your project budget, your technical team’s profile, and any exploration data you already have.
If you’re a researcher: proof of enrolment, a valid ID, your research proposal, a letter of support from your supervisor, and evidence of your institutional affiliation.
Timeline
The programme officially launched on June 10, 2026. Applications open in August 1st 2026, reviews and decisions happen in Q4 2026, and beneficiaries will be announced the same quarter. Successful applicants get notified by email and published on the SMDF EMERGE website and in national newspapers.
One thing worth knowing: the Exploration and Critical Minerals streams are assessed first-come, first-served. So no dulling once the portal opens, the earlier you apply, the better your chances.
It’s not just about the cash
If you win a grant under Exploration or Critical Minerals, you’re automatically enrolled in the EMERGE Accelerator, a training programme that comes with the award. It covers exploration best practices, getting your project investment-ready, business advisory support, and access to investors and mentors. Basically, SMDF wants to help grow your project to the point where private investors can put money into it too.
