The Nigerian Navy opened applications for Batch 39 of its Basic Training School on October 2, and the portal closes on October 31, 2026. That leaves about three weeks. Applying is free.
People who pass go through basic military training and then join the Navy as Ordinary Seamen. The official portal is www.joinnigeriannavy.navy.mil.ng.

Who is eligible to apply for the Nigerian Navy Batch 39 recruitment
Requirements every applicant must meet
- You must be a Nigerian citizen by birth, and you must have a National Identification Number (NIN).
- Height: at least 1.69m for males, 1.65m for females.
- You need to be medically, psychologically and physically fit, and meet the Navy’s medical and employment standards.
- No previous criminal conviction from a court of law.
- Basic English. If you can’t communicate in it, you can be disqualified at any stage of the exercise.
Age and qualification for each category of applicants
Age is counted as at December 31, 2026, not on the day you apply. For O’Level holders that means being born from 2004 to 2008 (that’s my own count from the 18 to 22 rule, so check your own date of birth against the portal).
| Category | Age (as at Dec 31, 2026) | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| O’Level / SSCE holders | 18 to 22 years | At least 5 credits including Mathematics and English, in not more than 2 sittings. WAEC, NECO, GCE or NABTEB, and not older than 2020 |
| OND / NCE holders | 18 to 26 years | At least 5 credits including Mathematics and English, in not more than 2 sittings. WAEC, NECO, GCE or NABTEB, and not older than 2015 |
| Chaplain / Imam Assistant, and Drivers / Mechanic | 18 to 28 years | Same as the OND / NCE row |
| Tradesmen | Check the portal | Trade Test certificate, a credit in English, and at least 4 passes in other subjects |
| Professions allied to medicine | Check the portal | ND from a recognised institution in Nigeria, plus a valid practising licence |
| Sportsmen and women | Check the portal | Proof of your experience, like certificates and medals |
The trades listed for tradesmen are tailoring, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, welding, electrician, painting, and refrigeration and air conditioning technology.
One small thing in the tradesmen rule. The guideline says the subject results must be “not later than 2017”. That most likely means not older than 2017, but the wording isn’t clear. Confirm on the portal before you apply under that category.
The “not older than 2020” rule is where many O’Level applicants will get stuck. If your only result is from 2019 or earlier, you don’t qualify under that category. If you wrote WAEC this year, here is how to check the WAEC 2026 result.

Documents you must print after you finish the Nigerian Navy Batch 39 online application
When you finish the online form, the Navy wants you to print four forms:
- Acknowledgement form
- Parent or guardian consent form
- Local Government attestation form
- Guarantor’s certification form
The Local Government attestation form is the one that takes time. It must be signed by a military officer of the rank of Commander in the Navy (or the same rank in the Army or Air Force), a Police officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police and above, or the Local Government Chairman. Any officer won’t do. Start looking for the right person this week, not on October 30.
How to apply for the Nigerian Navy Batch 39 recruitment step by step
- Find your category in the table above and check your certificate year, your age on December 31, 2026, and your height. Fall short on any of these and there’s no need to continue.
- Get your things ready before you open the portal. You need your NIN, your certificates and result details, a clear passport photograph, and a working phone number and email address.
- Type www.joinnigeriannavy.navy.mil.ng into your browser yourself. Don’t click a link somebody sent you on WhatsApp or Facebook. The Navy says the instruction page is on the portal from October 2.
- Read the instruction page first, before you fill anything.
- Fill in the online form and pick the category that matches your qualification. Keep your details the same as what is on your documents.
- Submit once. If the page hangs, don’t start a second application. Call the support line below first.
- Print the four forms straight after you submit.
- Get the forms signed. Your parent or guardian signs the consent form, your guarantor does theirs, and the attestation goes to one of the officers listed above.
- Keep everything safe, and check the portal often for the exam date and venues.
What happens after you apply for the Nigerian Navy Batch 39 recruitment
The Navy has only said that the exam date and venues will come later. Nothing beyond that is official for Batch 39 yet.
Last year’s exercise gives a rough idea. For Batch 38, the recruitment exam held on November 29, 2025. Shortlisted candidates were published on the Navy portal and called for an interview in January and February 2026, held at the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School in Onne, Rivers State, and at the Nigerian Defence Academy Old Site in Kaduna. Candidates were scheduled by zone.
That interview covered checking of credentials and certificates, a medical and physical test, and a written test. Candidates were told to bring two pairs of navy blue shorts and two white T-shirts with no marks on them. Hiding any medical history during selection could lead to automatic withdrawal from training and dismissal.
None of this is confirmed for Batch 39. Use it as a guide for how to prepare, and follow what the Navy posts.
On training, a Navy spokesman said in an earlier batch that recruits spent six months at the Basic Training School in Onne before graduating as ordinary sailors. Batch 39’s length hasn’t been announced.
Mistakes that can disqualify you from the Nigerian Navy Batch 39 recruitment
- Submitting more than one application. The Navy says outright that this leads to disqualification.
- Paying anyone to “help” you. The Navy says the process is free from start to finish.
- A certificate outside the year limit for your category.
- Giving false documents. In Batch 38 the Navy said anyone who presented false documents would be disqualified from the exercise.
- Leaving out a certificate at registration. The Batch 38 portal said certificates not declared at recruitment would not be considered later.
- Weak English. You can be disqualified at any stage for it.
- Hiding medical history (see the Batch 38 warning above).
