The HSC Youth Ambassador Program 2027 is open for applications until October 19, 2026. Nigeria is one of the countries you can pick on the form.
HSC here means Hamburg Sustainability Conference. It’s a yearly meeting in Germany, not an exam. Get picked and your travel and accommodation are covered. You then join the youth group at the conference in Hamburg on May 31 to June 1, 2027, after a roundtable week in December 2026.

About this HSC Youth Ambassador Program in Hamburg
The Hamburg Sustainability Conference is where government people, company bosses, UN officials and campaigners meet once a year to talk about how to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals (the SDGs). Germany’s development ministry (BMZ), the UNDP, the city of Hamburg and the Michael Otto Foundation started it. The first one was held in October 2024. The 2027 one will be the fourth.
You can’t just register and walk in, because the conference’s own FAQ says it’s invite only. The Youth Ambassador program is how young people from developing countries get a seat. The organizers say these young people’s views are often missing from big talks like this. The program is meant to fix that.
Ambassadors do real work at the conference. The official program page says they take part in panels, moderations, workshops and high-level dialogues, and the 2026 agenda backs that up. Damani Thomas from Jamaica spoke in a session on young people and political voice. Jacquiline Msambila from Tanzania was in sessions on AI, one of them on AI in health. Xana Maunze from Mozambique moderated a session on cities and industry working together on climate.
This is not a scholarship for school fees or a degree. You go, you speak and you meet people, then you go back to your work.
Benefits you can get from the HSC Youth Ambassador Program 2027
- Travel and accommodation costs are covered. The official page mentions no pocket money or allowance, so don’t plan on one.
- Depending on your expertise, you can join sessions as a speaker or as an attendee.
- 1,600+ leaders will be at the conference, heads of state and government included. You get a chance to connect with them.
- Press people and local youth in Hamburg are on the list of people you’ll meet too.
- Other ambassadors from around the world to swap ideas with, before, during and after the conference.
- The December roundtable week with that group. What’s covered for it will be shared during selection, so wait to hear.
Who is eligible to apply for the HSC Youth Ambassador Program 2027
- You must be between 18 and 30 years old.
- Come from a Global South country and live in one too. The form checks this against an OECD list of countries that receive development aid, and Nigeria is in the dropdown. Living abroad? Look at the Country of Residence box first, because the UK, US, Canada and Germany are not in it.
- Be a young leader already driving sustainability work in your community. Founding your own initiative counts. So does raising awareness through networks you belong to, if you can show real results.
- Confident English is a must.
- Some preparation work before the conference is possible, so you need free time too.
You must be free to travel from December 7 to 11, 2026 for the Roundtable Series. The official page says this is required to take part in the program.
Not working yet? The occupation box asks for your job, your studies or your main activity, so a student can apply, as long as you have real sustainability work to show. The organization name is optional.
How to apply for the HSC Youth Ambassador Program 2027
Use only the official page. There’s no payment step anywhere on the form. Nobody should ask you for money.
- Open the official application page: sustainability-conference.org/en/hsc27youthform.
- Start with the basic details: name, date of birth, gender, email, country of origin and country of residence. There’s also a question on whether you plan to move to another country in the next 6 months. Answer it truthfully.
- Next is your occupation, which can be a job, your studies or your main activity. Your organization or initiative name is optional.
- Pick two or three themes.
- Four written questions come next. Details on each are below.
- The LinkedIn link is compulsory. Up to six other links to your work are optional.
- Tick the privacy box, then submit.
Questions on the HSC Youth Ambassador Program form and how to answer them
These are the real questions on the form, so you can prepare before you open it. Write your answers in a notes app first and paste them in later. That way a bad network won’t wipe them.
Picking your themes on the HSC Youth Ambassador form
There are 13 themes plus an Other box, and you can pick two or three. Choose the ones your work can prove. If you run a small solar business, go for renewable energy and energy access, not every theme that sounds nice.
Writing about your work on sustainability
The form wants to know what you’ve done so far, what you plan to do next, who your audience is, what impact you made and what problems you faced. Answer those in that order. Numbers help (people reached, households connected, trees planted), but only use numbers that are true and that you can back up. Say what went wrong and how you handled it. Then give one clear plan for the next year.
Choosing the HSC 2026 session you would have joined
The form asks which session at HSC 2026 you would most have liked to join, and why. Open the official 2026 agenda and read through it before you answer. The 2026 session titles include “Shock-Proofing the Water-Economy Nexus”, “The Mangrove Opportunity: Scaling Nature-Based Solutions”, “AI for Health Equity: Advancing Better Health for Girls and Women”, “Small Businesses, Big Impact: MSMEs as the Engine of Resilient Recovery”, and “From Mobilization to Power: Youth Shaping Political Voice and Economic Futures”.
Pick one that touches your own work. Then say what you would have added or asked in that room. Praising the session is not enough.
Answering the private sector question
The form asks for one example from your country where companies worked with government or civil society to solve a sustainability problem. This matches what the conference is about, so don’t rush it. Choose an example you can explain properly: who did what, and what changed. Can’t explain it? Pick another one.
The question on other conferences and youth programs
You don’t need past conference experience. The form says so itself: people with different levels of experience are welcome. If you have none, say so and move on.
The LinkedIn and social media links
LinkedIn is compulsory. The form says the extra links are so the team can learn more about what you do. Before you submit, make sure your LinkedIn profile shows your project, your role and what the project achieved. If you’ve not used LinkedIn much, you can read our post on LinkedIn and Indeed for Nigerian job seekers.
How many people get picked for the HSC Youth Ambassador Program
Over 6,800 people applied for the 2026 round, according to the African Economic Research Consortium. The official page says 16 were picked. That’s well under 1 percent.
Seven of the 16 are from Africa: Algeria, Guinea, Kenya (two people), Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. None is from Nigeria.
The fields are not all climate, either. The 2026 list includes solar energy, water governance, farming, public health, climate finance, waste and AI ethics. So your work doesn’t have to be only about climate to count.
Those odds are tough. Apply anyway, but don’t send a rushed form. Interviews for short-listed people happen at the end of October. Keep checking your email, spam folder included.
German visa for Nigerians going to the HSC Youth Ambassador Program
If you get picked, you’ll need a visa to enter Germany. A Nigerian passport holder needs a Schengen visa for a short visit. The German Consulate General in Lagos handles most applications. The Embassy in Abuja only takes a few cases, like spouses and children of Germans.
The fee is 90 euros. You don’t get it back if the visa is refused. Processing takes at least 14 days and can stretch to several weeks, and the mission can’t answer questions about the status of your application. You can apply through the consulate, the embassy or the VFS Global centres in Abuja and Lagos. The German missions in Nigeria have warned people to stay away from agents.
Getting an appointment has been slow for Nigerians in the past. Start early once you’re confirmed. Before you spend your own money on flights, wait for the organizers to tell you how your travel will be booked.
The December roundtable may not even be in Germany. Last year’s roundtable week was in Nairobi, Kenya. When the organizers tell you the country, check that country’s visa rules separately. The official page doesn’t say whether the team helps with visa letters, so ask them at youth@sustainability-conference.org once you’re short-listed.
Mistakes to avoid when you apply for the HSC Youth Ambassador Program 2027
- Don’t wait for the last night. The page doesn’t show a time or time zone for October 19, so submit a day or two early.
- One answer copied into every question won’t work, since each question asks something different.
- Big claims you can’t back up are risky, because the form asks for links to your work.
- Your LinkedIn profile must not be empty. It’s compulsory.
- If you can’t travel December 7 to 11, don’t apply. That week is required.
- Paying anybody to “secure” a place is a scam, sha.
