The AU Peace Fund has opened applications for its 2028 funding cycle, running from 1 to 31 August 2026. Only AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities, Regional Mechanisms, and the AU’s own PAPS department can apply, not individuals or NGOs. The fund supports mediation, institutional capacity, and peace support operations, and by January 2024 it already held over $388 million. Eligible bodies apply by email to pfs@africanunion.org with the correct subject line, before the 31 August deadline.

The African Union just opened a new round of applications for its Peace Fund. This one is for the 2028 funding cycle, and the window runs from 1 August to 31 August 2026.

Before you get excited sha, one thing has to be clear from the start. This money is not for you as a person. It’s not for NGOs either. Only governments and specific regional bodies can apply for it.

Who Can Actually Apply

The AU Peace Fund only accepts applications from four types of bodies:

  • AU Member States (national governments, like Nigeria’s)
  • Regional Economic Communities, like ECOWAS
  • Regional Mechanisms for peace and security
  • The AU’s own Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department

That’s the full list. No students, no small NGOs, no private consultants. This is fixed under a decision the AU Executive Council made in 2016, known as EX.CL/Dec.1279(XLVI), which set out how the fund can be used and who can draw from it.

What The Fund Actually Pays For

The Peace Fund supports three areas of work.

Mediation and Preventive Diplomacy covers dialogue, negotiation, early warning systems, and stopping conflict before it turns violent.

Institutional Capacity is a different kind of support. It strengthens the bodies handling peace and security work, through training, policy support, and reform.

Peace Support Operations is the third window. It funds the planning and running of AU peace missions on the ground, the kind meant to protect civilians in conflict areas.

How Eligible Bodies Can Apply

If your organisation is one of the four types listed above, here’s the process.

Get the Eligibility Criteria, Application Guidelines, and Application Form from the AU Peace Fund Secretariat first.

Then send your application by email to pfs@africanunion.org. Use this exact subject line: “Application for Funding under the AU Peace Fund Programmatic Windows – Funding Cycle 2028”.

The deadline is 31 August 2026. Late applications won’t be considered, so don’t wait for the last week.

After the deadline, the AU screens every application first. Those that pass move on to a full project proposal, which then goes through technical evaluation and ranking before funding decisions come out.

Why This Fund Is Worth Watching

The Peace Fund isn’t a small pot of money. By January 2024, its balance had already crossed $388 million. Between 2023 and 2024, it released $19 million through its Crisis Reserve Facility, the arm used for fast emergency response when conflict breaks out. That reserve was raised from $5 million to $7 million in 2023, then to $10 million in 2024, which tells you the AU wants to move faster when trouble starts.

The bigger goal behind the fund is simple. Africa wants to handle its own peace and security problems instead of depending only on outside donors.

If You’re Not Eligible, Here’s Where You Fit In

If you’re a Nigerian student or job seeker reading this and wondering what’s in it for you, the honest answer is that this call isn’t your route in. But the AU Peace Fund Secretariat and the wider Political Affairs, Peace and Security department do post their own staff vacancies and internships on careers.au.int, separate from this funding call. If a career in peace and security work interests you, that’s the page to check, not this one.
